Are we to big!!

A number of times this season I have seen officials freeze under pressure, think about it.

There you are reffing a game with 40 - 60 people watching you make a mistake and you hear the odd, "come on ref" something happens and there is a nice gentle ripple of applause echoing across some allotments!

All of a sudden you turn up to a Canvey game BANG!!!!

300 hairy arsed islanders who not only know about football, they have a level of expectation when it comes to quality on the pitch, they are loud, they are vocal and if you make a mistake they will tell you, they will tell you loud and clear.

This is compounded by the way our fans place themselves around the pitch we have a large very noisy group in one section and small groups all around the pitch, all of whom share their opinions with the officials (and they can hear every word)I think they panic and are just not up to it!

We have seen officials and footballers at the highest non league level, we have even seen a few prem players at the lane, how can the officials make the grade!!

I believe they panic, these refs are used to seeing kick it in the air route one teams kick lumps out of each other on the field in front of one man and his dog.

They cannot cope with our game and our fans!!!

Do you notice how the refs always keep away from the sheds?

Do you notice that teams that come to play football always get a good game?

What you say is true bet we arent the only big club in that league, Dartford, Sudbury, enfield town all have there groups who will tell you their opinion.

Hornchurch and Harlow also last year.

not so much Harlow but they had there noisy group.

Think refs should just focus on whats happening on the game and forget about what happens in the stands. Although its only ryman they are still reffing a good level of football.

Leaving aside the thought that MOB has, apparently, acquainted himself with 300 hairy arses on Canvey Island, I wonder if he (or any other of our readers) has considered how many of those football cognoscenti have ever reffed any game at any level.

I have and it ain't easy. I realised that I wasn't cut out for it and packed it in pdq. The reason - pretty obvious really - my eyes couldn't keep up with the action.

Now I ain't saying that every ref should get his bleeding eyes tested - I'll leave that to some other bright spark. But I have observed some refs hesitating over a decision and the hesitation has, on some occasions, made me realise that they have seen the foul but in the space of time in which they saw the foul they have forgotten who committed it - and guessed the answer and got it wrong. The innocent party gets the hump, so do that team's supporters and they let the ref know it. Later the ref will even things up and others up the hump........So the merry-go-round of dodgy decisions goes on. Answer ; the ref is always right laugh

all right: almost always

It's worth remembering that we're not far from the foot of the pyramid. We cannot and should not expect the best ref's in the country. We should be expecting the weakest. As far as I'm aware, every referee has to start at the bottom and work up (they want to progress as much as we do), so to that conclusion, we have almost the weakest referees in the country in our league.

Living in the past? We have a past that we are very proud of! The FA cup result last night reminded me of that. Everyone wants a piece of Canvey, you only have to read this forum to see that, granted we are not playing at the level that we would like to but we are living with it. It wont be long before we are back where we deserve to be away from idiots like you!

This thread is a load of old nonsense and Steph is right!!

We could claim the same as Enfield Town, with the majority of our fanbase being ex-Enfield FC fans, and with our history being very much linked with the once massive non-league giant-killing club.

I think a couple of you are getting a little too big for your boots.

Is Jeff King going to plough loads of money back into the club to take you places again? Maybe then the glory hunting few thousand that have gone missing will come back to watch you. Hats off though to those that stuck by their club and follow them week in week out - not just home games!!

I would say that teams would be out to beat the likes of Sudbury, Dartford and ourselves just as much as you. I'm not knocking your history over the past 15 years or so, as reading on your website those were some impressive cup runs and a fantastic spell for your club, but I see that in 1993 you were still only in the Essex Senior League, and you need to appreciate what major funding at this level can do for a side.......and also what losing it could do.

Would you have completed those impressive feats had Mr.King not come along? or would you still be a minor club like say Hullbridge Sports languishing in the Essex Senior with relatively no history to speak of?

Club size in my book is mainly based upon the size of the gates you attract, not just in big cup matches, and yes in thisdivision you are one of the largest, but you are getting a little above yourselves.

I completely agree. We've got to get used to the fact we're not in the Conference any more and aren't going back any time soon. Unless we get another Jeff King, I can't see us being able to sustain football above the Ryman Premier, in it's current set-up. Ideas of the Conference are just pipe-dreams.

I do not think that we are "too big", but I do think that MOB has a point if you read his post. Can you imagine a referee having to make a tight last minute penalty decision. I guarantee that that decision is easier to make in front of 50 people at Witham than it is in front of 250 vocal fans at Canvey.

I never thought that we were a big club to be honest, I always thought we had a quality team. The Conference really hit that home, as were possibly the smallest club in the league and still didn't do too bad.

Ribbit/Yellow Bungle - My post was aimed at a couple of individuals who were talking nonsense on here, and I know that most Canvey fans like yourselves have your heads screwed on and know how it works at this level, and that it takes a lot of hard work to get back to that level without a little bit of funding. Who doesn't want to relive the glory days, but you need to be realistic at the same time.

Abbeynut - Am I a spokesman for every Enfield Town Supporter all of a sudden? This is my opinion, nobody elses. Find a quote, on this forum, of me saying that we are too big for the league that we are in. Granted I would love to see us rise back to the dizzy heights that the old Enfield FC were at, but I know it's a long process if it is to happen and we don't deserve to be there just because we are linked to that club. I do not speak for a small minority that may feel that the club is too big for the league - I don't know? I don't remember any of our fanbase saying such things - I think you need to distinguish between saying we are too big, and some being frustrated/moaning at not being top of the league (our performances in the last 3 seasons at this level would clearly prove that we should be wanting promotion, and challenging to be in the top spot).

Therefore Abbeynut, you can stop feeling so smug and clever with your post.
