Soccer: Williams looks set to join exodus

Skipper Lee Williams looks set to be the latest player to depart from Billericay Town.

The former Leyton Orient professional, who has been at New Lodge throughout manager Gary Calder's four-year reign, is expected to team-up with fellow Ryman Premier side Grays Athletic.

If he does go, Williams will become the fourth established player to leave the Blunts Wall Road club in recent weeks -- following hot on the heels of long-serving Chris Moore, Paul Fewings and Mark Graham, the latter having joined near neighbours Canvey Island this week.

Said Calder: "Obviously I'd be sorry to see Lee go, but I think he will.

"I can't blame him as obviously he's seen a number of senior players depart in recent weeks, but if he does go it certainly won't make my job any easier."

Calder, also without coach George Borg now following the resignation of the former Aldershot manager last week, has real problems getting a side together for tomorrow's trip to a Basingstoke Town outfit still pushing for a top-six finish.

Apart from long-term injury victim Dean Morris, who has an ankle ligament problem, Gary Henty, Andy Douglas and Russell Penn all look like missing tomorrow's action due to knocks.

No way! Willo is a great player and a fantastic captain, he has done so much for the club in the last 4 years and to see him go would be a very sad thing for the club.

Grays Athletic have now got 3 of our best players in their team, they must be absolutley loving it. They have been climbing ever since Roy and Martin joined and at this rate, they'll probably be above us in the league by the end of the season!

Willo has been a great player for the club, but has not been a fantastic captain. Whenever I have watched this season it has been Penn and Adedeji encouraging the players, when it is mainly the captain job. An example of this was at home at Aylesbury. After their goal, which Moore was at fault for, it was Penn and Ollie who lifted and Willo didn't say a word. Willo was a great player for three seasons, but has been a different player this season. Grays have only slightly improved since Carthy and Essandoh joined them. The main reason for this is the form of Martin Carthy. Roy Essandoh has not been that impressive so far at Grays. They have only risen a couple of places since they joined. Many people have suggested on this forum that we need a new captain, suggesting Willo was not a fantastic captain.
