as late Bevis strike gives victory to Lions

From the wembley observer, just for you johnno.

WEMBLEY might appear to be hapless at home but they have the uncanny ability of producing the goods away as they recorded their third consecutive victory on their travels with this splendid success at Ash on Saturday.

In a closely fought contest, the Lions showed great character to recover from a one-goal deficit to claim three points thanks to superb second-half strikes from Paul Shelton and Joel Bevis.

Both sides started positively with openings at either end. But it was Mark Jessop, replacing the unavailable Marc Talbot in the Wembley goal, who was the busier keeper.

He was equal to anything the Ash strikers threw at him during the early stages. However, he had little chance in preventing the home side taking the lead in the 24th minute. A couple of slick first-time passes breached the visitors' rearguard and the lurking Matt Stamp appeared at the far post to net from close range to make it 1-0.

Ash almost went further in front soon after when Matt Brunt hit the crossbar following a half-cleared corner.

The Lions replied and the unmarked Shelton, and then Matt Holian, should have done better with free headers from Ian Bates corners, but their efforts flew over.

However, Wembley's persistence was rewarded when they deservedly levelled matters seven minutes after the break. Kristian Hale emerged from his defensive position after winning possession to deliver a brilliant through ball into Shelton's path. The striker cut inside to enter the box, skilfully evaded the advancing keeper, then planted home the equaliser.

The visitors continued to press and looked the more likely side to score again, and they eventually did so in the 82nd minute to net what proved to be the decisive goal.

Bevis collected a loose ball in the middle of the park and powered his way goalward, out-muscling a couple of defenders to fire a glorious low, 20-yard drive beyond the diving keeper for Wembley's late winner.

That was bloody weeks ago you muppet!

As you can read, we were all over a very poor Wembley. If we could finish in front of goal it may have been 5 or 6 but for a very good goalkeeping display.

On the plus side for Ash - not much has changed in front of goal from last season. There are no pluses for Wembley. Much worse than last year. (Except for the result away to Ash obviously).

And they've lost there best striker..... wink (that was just for you my friend!!)
