BBC Kent Radio Coverage

I have to premise this post with the fact that I was listening to the BBC Kent Broadcast at 2am Australian time.

I also acknowledge that, according to Chas and Gemma, that the First Half with the exception of the send off was pretty featureless....and that a lot of the prattle was covering dead spots in the action.

I also understand that Chas is not a fulltime football caller....I hope!

I also don't have any experience of listening to football broadcasts at Conference level...although I do call the local dog races, basketball games and did 2 High School American Football games in Minnesota(try and fill the gaps there!)......so I understand that it's not easy..especially in a dull game.

BUT

Keeping in mind that this should be treated as constructive criticism

What was that broadcast all about?

Listening to a radio broadcast I want to hear the caller give me a word picture that enables me to imagine where the ball is, who's got the ball, whose running off the ball, who's defending and what the formations being employed by the managers are.

Throw in fillers on player and match histories for depth of understanding.

All we got, with the odd interruption of actual football description, was banter and prattle between Chas and Gemma.

There were minutes of remotely associated social chatter interspersed with the odd football description and that was usually only when a goal from either side looked imminent.

Even when Chas handed over to Gemma...he couldn't resist the temptation to interrupt her nervous description....I got the impression that she hadn't done much of this before either.

I don't want to hear about you getting a cup of tea and your exploits in the Sunday Leagues...while nice colour...it should not take the place of factual and comprehensive description.

I see that Tuesday night's broadcast involves a different caller and has Chas as his 'colour' man.

Hoping for better.

I would agree with you that they did wander off the actual game to often at times, but thats local radio i think the two of them are more radio broadcasters rather than sports broadcasters.

but in someways i found the radio kent coverage refreshing as i am used to the old firm lickspittle (great word that)style of the so called national station of radio scotland, were all that matters are the glasgow twins and the rest of us are just space fillers .

I think radio kents main sports guy was in the studio but will be at the game thursday.

We can't afford Andy Gray & Martin Tyler ( they are presenters/commentators on SKY for Premier League football matches in case anyone is not familiar ).

Maybe that will change now that the 20,000 are in charge.

Listening to local radio commentary, and all the quirks that may bring, is part of non league tradition if you can't make the game.....not that tradition counts for f*ck all anymore !!

Cheers,

If you want a "proper" commentary then may I suggest you go and find another team to buy/support.

I've been listening to the internet commentaries since they first began a few years back. Ok, so Chas might not give you a kick by kick commentary but he gives you a flavour of the game and the odd laugh now and then.

You should be lucky that he, and Radio Kent, provide such a service.

If you don't like it than can I kindly suggest you b*gger off and leave the rest of us to enjoy Chas, Greenie and all the other commentary bods.

So much for constructive criticism.
Not expecting world class coverage and haven't heard 'Greenie and the other commentary bods'...
BUT
Whats the point of broadcasting a football match if you are not giving a kick by kick description?
You can do that and still give the 'flavour of the game and the odd laugh now and then"
But when the flavour and odd laugh dominate the broadcast you may as well be listening to a chat show.
I can understand that you as alocal can probably fill in the gaps but when you are listening from overseas you need more detail.

I wont b*gger off as I am prepared to stay up until 3:30-4:00am to hear how the team are faring....all I'm asking for is less chit chat and more football.

AS far as me being lucky that Radio Kent provides such a service....I think the BBC would appreciate some feedback.

Look forward to Thursday's coverage.

Thankyou, fellow Radiohead fan! The new album is beautiful isn't it!

Indeed - in fact, it's in serious danger of developing into my second favourite Radiohead album behind OK Computer.

Not long to wait now for the 'discbox' and the bonus CD with non-album tracks.

Well identified - chosen because the lyric seems to me to be eerily relevant to the situation at the Fleet post-takeover announcement, as it happens.

Well, it may be the most commercial, and may not endear you too much to the aficionados, but I can't help but agree. The latest one is very strong in parts too. Well worth two quid. Ahem.

Oh, and Charles, please don't sanitise your digressions. Things are fine the way they are!
