How many managers ?

Dear All

Interesting thread

Bad news

Re the suggestion that I've prepared an item for a future programme re the first programme, I'm sory to say that the item sitting in the pending tray is mine about an early (1940s) club membership card

Good news

I have on loan a couple of Club files, loaned on the basis of my volunteering to undertake compiling a club history. One of the files contains what purports to be 'the first Billericay Programme'. Unhappily it is a photocopy. It is also a handwritten, folded A4 job.

Bad news

My ambition has, so far, outstripped my capacity and the 'history' is not so very far advanced. And I cannot immediately lay my hands on the file - it is only temporay though and I'll do an item for the programme on this item some time this season

Good news

I have purchased on ebay a couple of notification postcards, cards sent to players telling them they have been selected to play on Saturday etc etc, from the early 1960s. I'll prepare an item on these too sometime soon.

Managers

On the managers' thread, Brian Moffat, who was Peter Burton's Assistant, followed Peter's period, so far as I recall without any gap between the two. I do not recall that Peter Brabrook followed Brian, my recollection is that he came in as asistant to John Kendall who, in the period I went to all matches home and away, was the most successful manager - there will be those who remember a banner saying 'Kendall for England' when the top job was vacant and Graham Kelly was a visitor (v Yeading FAT)... maybe someone reading this actually waved it on the day!

Well that story about the banner bought back some happy memories, at that time I was the Chairman and I made that banner on the morning of the match by grabbing a sheet and laying it on the patio of my house in London Road, I then painted in red paint " Kendall for England " on it and left it to dry, a couple of hours later I pulled it from the patio where the paint had gone through the sheet and permanently put the message on the patio !!!! it was still there when I left ten years ago, good memories. Peter Brabrook was never manager at Billericay and was only assistant to JK , I still see PB and had dinner with him a couple of months ago, he is at West Ham. I have been living down here in southern Spain near to Malaga for ten years now and for my sins have a season ticket at Malaga who have just been promoted to La Liga Div 1, my season ticket costs just 125 pounds for a seat four rows from front, not bad eh. May I wish Billericay all the best for the coming season and a very big hello to anyone who can remember me. Best wishes, yours in sport.. Brian Cornes

The reason for me to list Peter Brabook as a manager is that I actually have a program where he is listed as the current manager. Could he maybe have been a caretaker manager a few matches before Kendall took the reigns after Moffatt?

Nice to hear that he's doing well. I had the pleasure to meet him and his son at New Lodge a few years back, both very nice guys. He was going to have a new hip surgery soon at that time. If you ever bump into him again, please say hello from that crazy norwegian... :-)

With reference to the change of manager to JK, I received a phone call on the sunday morning from Brian Moffatt informing me that he was resigning as of now, in those days JK went to the club for a drink sunday lunchtime I met him there and sat in one of the alcoves and told him that I wanted him to take over as caretaker manager until we made a permanent appointment, he was not happy to do this and I insisted that he should, he took over and was manager from the next game, I cant remember where but I think it was a cup game, we interviwed many potential managers and had compiled a short list, JK would visit me in my office and was becoming more and more interested in becoming the permanent manager, he had been very succesful and was given the job , later he appointed PB as his assistant, together they gained promotion. The last I heard of BM was that he lived on the Isle of Weight and had a guest house. I hope this will clarify the situation.

Cheers BF. All my programmes are safely stored away and ready to be plundered for info whenever needed, be it on this forum or in the programme if required. I am sure those involved in the club these days are much more interested in looking forward than back though, however it was interesting to see the nostalgia piece at the back of the friendlies programme. I only found out recently that one of the guys in a quiz team we compete against every Thursday is Steve Griffiths (he doesn't take part in his goalies kit and look 25 any more..), so you can bet that prog will be coming with me to the pub this Thursday ! LOL Also, I remember Doug's dad coming to New Lodge a lot back in the day. Haven't seen Dougie for a little while but back in the 90s we presented a Saturday morning sports show together on Mayflower FM and one week had JK, Tolo Mas and John Purdie squeezed in the studio with us, ironically just a few feet from where that quiz night takes place !

Just realized there was a page two to this thread ! Brian, great to hear from you - I think you squeezed into that rickety old studio too a couple of times,eh?! Fascinating reading this stuff, if it carries on like this maybe we will have to have a "Billericay Town Gold" forum specifically for nostalgia ! Coincidentally, a former Ricay resident mate of mine and occasional Town fan moved to near Malaga (El Faro, near Fuengirola) about four years ago and also had a season ticket for Malaga in the year they got relegated from the top flight there. Keep this stuff coming folks...

Remember it well Neil, at the back of the White Hart I beleive, on one occasion with Dougie who would not stop talking, one of the greats in the history of the club, I would love to meet up with him again, how about organising a reunion night at the club ? I too still have a box of old programmes and memorabilia that I must get round to sorting out. Also a good guy to get some history of the club from would be Dereck Hanks, I know he comes to some games, he was chairman for all three Vase victories and played for Billericay at Sun Corner, anyway whats this got to do with " How many managers ? " !!!!!

I have another question: In the club's history it tells that Billericay Town FC played in the Mid-Essex League from after the first world war (1918?) and until 1947.

But in the 30's we played in something called Chelmsford & District League. Was this a part of the Mid-Essex league, or is the information on the website wrong?

In 1930-1931 we won the Chelmsford & District League Cup, in 1931-1932 we won division 2 of the same league (and runners up in the league cup) and in 1932-1933 we took the double, both cup and league, still in the Celmsford & District League.

I'm currently working both day and night to finish the new norwegian website which will go "live" on friday, and will of course have a large historic and statistics section.
