Cameras at games (our own that is)

Have the rules about using cameras (as fans) been relaxed recently? There seems to flashes going off all over the place on Saturday. One guy at the KSC game had a Nikon SLR camera (never meet you Harry, but it might have been you from descriptions on other threads). He was approached by two stewards in at the Swanscombe end and it disappeared. Yet the camera was back again on Saturday. I have been at games before were I have seen a bloke pull out a camera to photograph his kid at the football only to be descended upon by stewards and told to put it away.

Have the rules changed? Or are they being bent a bit for MyFC people?

That was me on Tuesday night. I took my camera along thinking that there was not going to be a problem, I was wrong. At first I thought the problem was with the flash that isn't brilliant but is good enough to do the job. When asked I removed the flash but continued to take pictures. Because of this the automatic flash kicked in and I was told that I was now going to be evicted from the ground.

After talking with the head steward he was kind enough to let me stay on the proviso that he could confiscate my camera and I would then get it back at the end of the game, which I did.

For the Stafford match I took my camera along with the hope of speaking to someone at the club and asking how I would go about taking pictures with the permission of the club. When I told this person what had happened he couldn't believe it but said he would speak to the steward and see if we could resolve the issue.

When the match started I took my camera with me to the Swanscombe end and was hoping to speak with the head steward and telling him to speak to the same club employee that I spoke to thus allowing me to take pictures. Up until speaking to the head steward I did not take one photo of the game. Once he had spoken to the club employee he returned with a solution but this has yet to be finalised. I took no pictures of yesterdays match.

I believe it is not the fact that I am taking photos but instead it is the quality of the camera I'm using that is the issue, please don't take my word for it though, if in doubt contact the club.

I have been prevented from taking photos from Rushden, Burton (because I was too cocky to one of their stewards after the shocking treatment we received), Exeter City and Aldershot (again I was cocky).

Also finally I have not told anyone that is okay to take photos of the game, if you take your camera to the next match only to be told to put it away do not say "it's okay Harry J Allstars told me it would be okay", you'll just get laughed at.

I've taken my professional looking camera with me to Wembley five times and there has never been a problem. I had it with me for the Miami Dolphins game last month and was sitting at the opposite end to where the two touchdowns were scored but got near perfect shots of both so I could potentially sell them on so I don't know how it's all worked out.

I always thought that if you had a 'professional' camera, it was thought you were taking the pix for 'professional' reasons and making money - therefore the club, venue whatever would expect you to have 'official' status (no doubt something you have to pay for!)

However, with the drop in camera prices, its now much easier for the amateur to afford 'professional' looking kit - this causes the problem.

H, what reason were you given for the attempted ejection? Surely if the club operates a 'no camera' rule - it should be made very obvious to avoid such situations?

At first I was told there was a problem because of the flash. I then took the flash off and thought everything was okay.

A professional guy had his camera and was using the flash, could this not distract the players? Although I see what your saying.

Cameras are not allowed into any match conference South and above - the problem is this is not enforced.

This is not a club decision - rather it is a licensing rule with the FA.

I speak as a professional photographer - heck I can't even turn up to any match I choose and take photos frown

If this was the Miami Dolphins - then that is understandable - in the USA, then tend to use flash at American football (not sure why, but they do) - for any sport though flash is a no-no

Who are you asking?

I do not use flash for sport.

I should have quoted the post - Harry J Allstars was talking about having his flash on - and a pro that was taking pictures with a flash too.
