Anti-War March Demo Thing

Recommended Posts

It's not that I've resisted temptation, CZ, rather I have only just found a few minutes to respond to your proddings.

In my view, as I have expressed elsewhere, there was no just cause for this war. Those views are unchanged. However, it has now started and I hope that, firstly it is over as quickly as possible with the Allies achieving their stated objective, and secondly with as few deaths as is possible.

I have a feeling that you and those like you who appear to have blind faith in your leaders, assume that those who argued against war were clearly wrong and that is an end to it.

I have a dreadful feeling that this war, once over with the declared aims of the lunatics achieved, will be only the beginning, not the end.

No. I'm not going on the march.

In The Green Mile, Percy Whetmore (the sniving little b#st#rd, mummy's on the board that's how I've got the job and don't touch me or I'll get you sacked) takes charge of the execution of Eduard Delacroix, so that he can have the knowledge that he killed someone, and can move on. Having been embarassed by Delacroix days earlier, Whetmore 'got his own back' by not soaking the sponge that sends the electricity immediately to the brain. The execution goes terribly badly, and Delacroix has flames shooting from his head. He is burning alive, being tortured, rather than quickly and efficiently. A horrible smell goes around the room, and the Commissioner bloke (the shephard in Babe) runs over to Paul Edgcomb (Tom Hanks) and shouts at him to shut the execution off. Edgcomb replies 'Look at him [Delacroix]. He's still alive. You want me to turn it off whilst he's still alive?'

The war has started already, Zeal. If you read AFF's post, you'll understand the concept of believing that if you start something, you must finish the job.

As I said in another post regarding the subject, 'the problem after a war is with the victor. He thinks he has just proved that war and violence pay. Who will now teach him a lesson?'

Minority Report & Green Mile are not the basis by which we live our lives GHA, they are sci-fi and yes both have morals to their story, but neither have any relevance to the war.

The victor of this war knows that violence does pay, it is the most unfortunate and simple answer. In life we have to fight for things, and that does mean violence and destruction, the only real question is the worthiness of the battle, something we're aren't going to agree upon I think.

WW2 was won with violence of the most extreme nature, but it had to be won. I don't believe war equates to glory, but it is a means to an end.

No, not the end, AFF. Probably not even the beginning of the end.

But possibly the end of the beginning. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I think you're right on all points in your post there, SP. The opening statement is open to debate, as most moral tales can be adapted to other circumstances. However.

Surely nobody [in the West] who believes that there is no just cause for this war can possibly be secretly hoping that Saddam 'wins'.

GHA's comment concerning 'violence paying' etc. is a significant, but not the only issue of concern. It would be of less concern, of course, if I felt that there is just cause for this war.

Britains future relations with European allies. What do you think that France, Russia, Germany and China are doing right now? [a.] Preparing to join the victory celebrations? [b.] Drafting a U.N. Resolution condemning U.S. and U.K. for acting contrary to the U.N, Charter. Delete as applicable.

The Middle East. Do you think that the Saudis and the remaining Arab states, including in particular Iran, are happy to see the Allied forces invading an oil-producing state under dictatorial rule without the sanction of the U.N.?

The U.N. The Allies have ridden roughshod over the rules of the club. What next?

Iraq. What next?

International Terrorism. Do you think that the current Allied action in Iraq will result in more or less incidents of 'International terrorism'?

Bush & Blair. Useless diplomats.

Blair. Useless.

Your comment that war is a means to an end. What end?
