BASIC GUIDE TO FOLLOWING THE FLEET

Recommended Posts

Stolen a bit from another thread but here are a few pointers to get started with for our new fans:

I am sure there are many more:

When supporting the Fleet in writing it is always "Up the Fleet".

When shouting out it is "Come on you Reds" or "Come on you Fleet"

When we are playing away in our change strip it is usual to shout "Come on you reds, I mean..." blues, yellows etc - depending on what colour our away strip is a the time - currently yellow and black.

The 4 sides of the ground are "The Plough End" ('cause there is a pub outside the ground of the same name), "The Swanscombe End" (the other end behind a goal nearest to Swanscombe, the "Main Stand" (where oddly enough you sit down - but have to pay for your seat) and the Terrace opposite the main stand that I am not sure has a name but generally gets called the "road side" or the "tea bar" side (a bit odd as there is a tea bar on the main stand side too). The road side has two identified areas, The HalfWay Line and the Tea Bar (as in "the blokes in front of the tea bar").

The Fleet have their own song called "Cheer cheer here come the Fleet" and over the years have run out on to the pitch to this being played, but not at present. The song is not very good but it is ours and might be available on CD still!

A typical Fleet supporter always hopes for the best and expects the worst...Years of expectation, dissappointment and the odd bit of real success does that to you. Stonebridge Road can be the only place you want to be one week and the last place you ever want to go the next, but you still go back anyway hoping for the best...

Our local rivals over the years have included Dartford (now slowly on their way back), Maidstone (still not doing much these days), Canvey Island (ditto) and to a little extent Grays (a bit up and down and not really treated as local rivals anyway). We almost all detest Gillingham and hope they eventually get relegated/we get promoted so that we can play them for real.

There are a hard core of 800 to 1000 real Fleet Supporters at present and around 100 of these follow us away too on a regular basis. Many more locals get involved when we do well in the FA Cup (not of late) but they soon stop coming to matches again.

Fleet supporters love the type of player who gives his all, who cares and who tries. We do not have much time for the flash harry who will do ok for a while and then start to wilt when the going gets tough. We really like characters though either to love (our team) or hate (the opposition)...anything but bland.

Finally as you will have noticed by now, we moan a lot, but that really is part of the enjoyment...

Hi behindthegoal,

Thanks for posting this, it was just what I was looking for. I'm a MyFootballClub member and wanted to find out more about the club, but not the usual PR nonsense, I want to know the real club from it's true supporters.

Thanks,

Liz01

Blimey - this must be deja vu as it certainly sounds similar to life as a Norwich City supporter for the last 43 years!! Feeling at home already. Years of continuous depression highlighted by bursts of optimism. Management speak grey suits trying to convince you that you should call your stands the 'Jarrold' Stand and the 'Norwich and Peterborough Stand' when everyone knows they are the South Stand and the River End! Good wholesome songs e.g. 'Always s**t on the old blue and white' etc etc

Hope to get to Stonebridge in the not too distant future or an away game here in the East!

Up The Fleet (and On The Ball City!)

Professor Kenny, respected holder of a doctorate in car-park management and vocal encouragement, will be holding these classes in the town's Victoria Centre. You can't miss it, next to the statue of the old dear missing a hand which was presumably removed by a passing drunk in years past.

Class.

IMHO, nobody should be able to claim to be a real Fleet supporter if they do not know:

1 Who Professor Kenny is

2 Where he is to be found before & during games & what doing.

This should be set as a basic initiation test for all our new supporters with no further clues given.

I think at least one of our MyFC fans is from Kilkenny dark3

A clash of interests or is it all part of a larger conspiracy?
