Maidstone v 10-Man Canvey. Only one winner!

I want us to win all games, but sometimes, when the pre-match banter with opposing fans suggests that Canvey are only here to make up the numbers, well, I want to win come hell or high water. Maidstone are in a league higher than us and, according to the yellow and black scarved fan I was talking to, are riding high and wanting to do well in this competition.

How the mighty doth fall. For the first half it was pretty even although with some better finishing the home team might have grabbed an early goal or two. But at the other end of the park Canvey proved that they can be fast and deadly. We still lack width IMO and once we break down one flank there is no follow-up should the ball be over struck and end up on the opposite flank. But in spite of this we played some lovely flowing football and had we had the rub of the green we would have certainly put one away, if not more.

One arrogant home fan said in a very loud voice as he walked round for his half-time Bovril, “Canvey aren’t the worst team we’ve seen at Bourne Park this season!” Cheeky [****!!****]. If that’s how Maidstone struggle against opposition from a lower league, Gawd help ‘em.

The second half looked as if it might be more of the same with some good flowing football from both teams. Canvey had the advantage that they were being cheered on by an amazing group of drunken idiots who cheered, sang, shouted and generally went mental for the whole game. With such fantastic support to lift them I felt that it was only a matter of time. Then, disaster struck. Colin Wall got his second yellow card of the afternoon. The first was deserved but the second was a nonsense and Trigger look-alike man in black was well over the top in giving the lanky defender his marching orders.

Now Canvey were well and truly under the cosh. Maidstone threw everything they had at the Gulls and it was one-way traffic for at least 20 minutes. But, truth is, they weren’t good enough to break Canvey down. The defence stood resolute and even when the sea wall was breached, Ricky Wiseman was on tip-top form.

Then John Stuart came up trumps with a fantastic cross that found the flying head of Danny Curran. The net bulged, the ‘keeper started crying and the visiting fans were ecstatic. With 10 minutes to go, could Canvey do it? Could they kick Maidstone out of the Trophy? They gave it everything they had and somehow we all knew they would do it. Even the referee was enjoying it so much he wanted the game to go on forever; so he added at least another five minutes of play.

Good job the ref did finally blow his whistle. Canvey looked far more likely to score than the home team and came close on at least 2 more occasions.

When the final whistle finally came, the players came down to the fans behind the goal and it was reminiscent of the scenes at Villa Park in 2001. Real respect between the players and the fans. Maidstone must have wondered what it was all about as they crept away to lick their wounds.

A great day out. Now, who do we fancy for the next round?

Message on the Maidstone forum tonight says -

"We were attackingly as potent as a team what is very impotent."

Tells you a lot, doesn't it?

I have edited this post as I realise that what I said was offensive to Maindstone fans and had no place on this forum. Please accept my apologies if I upset anyone. Not my normal style at all. Merv

Funnily enough I've used the word 'impotent' to describe their attack in my match report. grin

I note how you neglect to mention the "We're a conference team, what the f**k are we doing here? fans from Canvey*

Actually the vast majority of our squad are from our Kent league winning team. Glad you think so highly of the Kent league.

*Obviously a small minority, probably just like the Maidstone comments, but hey, gotta love sweeping generalizations.

The better team won on the day, we just didn't show up, and put in our most inept display in a while.

Cracking set of fans to.

Except for Merv, who appears to be a twat who's put me off uploading the highlights.

I had to laugh when a Maidstone fan at the end of the game, asked me, why we are cheering, it's only the FA Trophy!

I said look, for a team with no money I think even Maidstone would've settled for the £3,000 prize money and a share of the gate, (389 looks fixed to me!) But no, he said he'd rather take the league...

Ha! Ryman Prem, you're having a laugh!! No way did that team represent 6th in a league higher. Can see why Chelmsford put seven past them. I went into the game satisfied enough to hold them to a replay. But when I saw the state of the ground and the attitude of some inbred fans, (those I spoke to during the game were quite pleasant) I just wanted us to get it over and done with, three grand in the kitty and our name in the hat, thank you very much.

I would say that for about an hour Maidstone matched us and either team could've scored just as easily and as the second half went on one goal would clinch it, I just wanted it to be us! Once Colin was sent off and Jay Curran had replaced Ruggy, Maidstone thought they just needed to hold out and we would falter - Well f*ck them! We've got Danny Curran and he and Jon Stuart are already heading my contention for player of the year.

Ricky deserved man of the match for keeping Maidstone out when the defence was beaten and he collected up everything thrown at him. His confidence and bravery were second to none. Stuart's cross was excellent, basic, first time and needed no fancy footwork, met it's man and the result was perfect!

Now we've beaten those cocky Kents, I'm willing to take anything in the next round! Also, if anyone can find the interview with their Manager stating we were as bad as them, I'll gladly have a listen and try not to split my sides too much.

PS Heathside I think you're talking out your [****!!****] with that "Conference" comment, no true Canvey fan would say that, unless you're stating what you chose to hear from a conversation and in reply to your question on your forum: Jay Curran replaced Nicky Rugg and it was Ryan Edgar who replaced Gabriel Fanibuyan.

Great result yesterday. So much spirit in the side. Jon Stuart had a fantastic game. No idea what he was doing on the left wing in the last ten minutes of the game but what a great cross for Danny Curran.

Thought we stopped them from playing. I can't believe they are in the top 8 in the Ryman Premier but we still had to work for our win and showed immense spirit after Colin was sent off.

Thought Clydie worked his socks off and Ricky had a great game in goal. His handling was excellent and made a couple of decent saves.

Support yesterday was immense. Got a couple of videos of the singing that I might load up on here when I get a chance.

Homer Simpson proved to be our lucky mascot!!!
