Comments on Ricay game

We kicked into a strong wind in the first half, during which Billericay had the best chances. We did manage to get the ball forward a few times during the half but to be honest did not look very threatening.

SCS was our hero in the first half with some fine saves. Somebody, I think it was Morris, also managed to clear as the ball rolled along the goal line.

Second half was a different story, especially after their goalie (briefly with the Gate once) got stretchered off. Jackson was also hurt in the incident, but played on for a bit.

The sub goalkeeper had a bit of a mare, although it can’t have been fun trying to kick into that howling gale. However it gave us a chance to pressure them and soon enough we got the goal after a good effort by Pinnock and a scramble in the 6-yard box. I still don’t know who scored, although it seemed to be Ryan Martin, and it would have been no less than he deserved.

Player by player:

Scott C-S 8: an excellent display, including some entertaining expeditions outside the area.

Peters 8: he oozes class. If only we could keep him.

Central pair Young 6, Smith 6.

Left back Lovegrove 6: started very nervously but kept his head up and looked a lot more comfortable towards the end.

Martin 8: a good performance out of position. Morris 5, McKimm 5. We didn’t seem to gel in midfield today. JJ 5.

Pinnock 7, Haworth 7.

My MOM would be Scotty in goal, because without his first half saves we could have gone in at half time 2 or even 3 down.

The football wasn’t pretty but it was good non-league stuff. Ricay will think they should have won it, but I think we did enough.

It was bloody cold on the terraces but they have a very nice bar. The programme is excellent too.

And to answer Michael’s question on another thread: yes I would much rather see a 4-3 win after coming back from 3-1 down (eg Fisher) than a boring 1-0. Having said that, a win is a win and I am not knocking it.

I don't normally comment on other people's ratings because it's only right that you say it how you see it and I can do that through the official match reports.

But (and you knew one was coming) I feel the need to redress the balance as far as Morris was concerned. My perspective is that he was outstanding today. I agree about Macca, but Kieran ran his socks off. He got stuck in, hit the ball forward quickly when under pressure, passsed pretty well when he had time and tackled with tenacity. When Jay comes back Robin has a real selection headache, Morris was that good for me.

Fair enough Wellsie. I am sure you were paying more attention than me. I just happened to notice a few erratic passes, the booking, and I just got the overall impression that we were light in the middle.

I agree Morris worked hard (as did most of the lads today), and you obviously spotted what I missed. Apologies to Kieran for under-rating him.

No need for the apol. you can do no more than say it as you see it. SCS was superb today, I'd agree. Not just the saves but coming out of his area at pace and bravely.

I have an interseting interview with Robin that will be available later this evening in which he mentions SCS and Morris.

I too had conflicting opinions about Smith & Young given to me. However it was good result & we didn't concede so I'll accept that the two of them did a good job. They MUST have done.

Smith will be better inside than in the full backs role. His lack of pace isn't so obvious there.I'm still not totally convinced about him but its good to hear(from one of those opinions),that he did well today.

I'm really pleased for him & I'm also more than happy to be able to congratulate him on his efforts today.

Scott seems to have come on leaps & bounds & seems to learnt along the way.He has always been a good shot stopper from close range but it seems he is maturing & getting other things right as well now.

Well done to both of these two,in particular, and to all the others of course.

Morris gets some rave reviews from today also I see & thats another good thing. He deserves a good day for being so patient.

I hope Jacko is okay.

Ah yes, but now we have already won in Essex it doesn't bode well for Chelmsford - about the only place we normally win!

What is PS doing these days?

Did'nt sign for Kings Lynn afterall, and apparently injured ?

has he signed for anyone/is he injured?

Don't think too many would complain if he wore the 'Gate shirt again in the near future.

Can't think of a better way to playing yourself back to fitnessthan signing for margate
