McClaren gone! Who do SSMFL teams want next?

Recommended Posts

I've seen names being thrown about such as Mourinho, Martin O'Neill, Capello and even Alan Shearer (someone's having a laugh!) but I'm interested what you think?

Other contenders would be Harry Redknapp, Stuart Pearce and Martin Jol?

Also now with hindsight, do you think Sven was all that bad?

Or do you think that, in principle, the manager should be from the country he is representing?

People should really have learned by now that:

a) being a good club manager does not necessarily make a good international manager;

B) the obvious people's choice doesn't always work out - Graham Taylor was generally considered the outstanding candidate for the job when appointed and the FA were loudly applauded but look how that ended up!

It is NOT essential for the next England manager to be at a big club or to have vast managerial experience (e.g. Klinsmann managing Germany). The main asset they need is to be able to command the respect of top-earning Premiership players. This doesn't exclude your Sam Allardyce's, Martin O'Neill's, Jose Mourinho's, Alan Curbishley's or Harry Redknapp's from being considered for the job, but it means that a Dennis Wise or a Teddy Sheringham or an Alan Shearer or a David O'Leary have as equal a chance of producing a successful England team as the usual names that get trotted out at these times.

The bottom line is that whoever is appointed at international level is a gamble and nobody will know whether they are the right appointment until they have done the job for a while and shown that they have the tactical nous, and element of luck, that is required.

I just wish we wouldn't keep going down this tired and blinkered old route of looking at the club managers whose clubs happen to be in form at the present time and restricting ourselves to a shortlist made up of those few names.

I personally would be happy to see Alan Shearer given a chance.

The top 10 attributes for the England managers job candidates.

1) Be able to look smart(ish) in a suit.

2) If you were born in this country be able to string a sentence together ideally in English.

3) Be able to brown-nose your way around Brian Barwick.

4) Preferably know something about football, although this can be open to negotiation.

5) Have never achieved or won anything (more than the LDV Vans Trophy) with any club or any other country.

6) Require a 5 year contract at 8 figures plus per annum as a bare minimum.

7) No skeletons in the cupboard - so obviously David Beckham can't apply as he's married to one.

8) Have a penchance for shagging secretarial staff at Soho Square or anywhere that is public and causes an embarrassment.

9) Not to have a name that can easily be transcribed into a root vegetable.

10) Have a good ghost writer ready to compile the obligitory spilling of the beans autobiography upon being sacked.

Ideally the candidate should have already appeared on 'I'm a celebrity get me out of here'

FM I agree with alot of what you're saying but to include someone with no experience, like Shearer, would contravene my other theory that a good player, does not automatically make a good manager!

I would put Stuart Pearce ahead of Shearer, after all, AS only has pundit knowledge and SP has been doing well with the Under-21's!

I agree that a good player doesn't make a good CLUB manager but the main reason for this is they cannot deal with the factor that some players that play for them are not up to their skill levels (a major issue with Glenn Hoddle, in particular). However, at international level, the players should already have sufficient skill levels, endeavour, effort, hunger and desire that all the manager needs to do is obtain and retain their respect for him. Alan Shearer, or even the likes of Chris Waddle or Peter Beardsley, would have sufficient characteristics to carry out the role.

Rafa Benitez, tactically brilliant in one off battles! Look at his record in the Europe, both at Liverpool and Valencia! Think International management would suit him more than club management where he wouldnt have to worry about resting players.

Then maybe alongside him someone like stuart pearce, alan shearer or maybe even ian wright. Could be a distinct possibility now as well with him falling out with the american owners

Why you are all thinking about the next England manager I suppose you haven't given too much thought as to who to support in Euro 2008. This article from the Times on line might help
