IDIOT REF

In the 12th minute of the game, the goalkeeper carried the ball outside of his area and was flagged by the linesman. The referee awarded a free kick and marched up to the keeper. Now we know the law regarding this and the goalkeeper should have been sent off.

In a match at Southend United once, the Cambridge United keeper ran out and dived to gather the ball but on the very wet and slippery surface slid out of the area. Now that was bad luck but the referee had to send him off.

Now back to tonight, the referee spoke to the keeper and didn't even give him a yellow.

At half-time I asked the referee why he hadn't sent the keeper off and his exact words to me were "No chance, he was only a little way out of his area."

Well excuse me, isn't that the same as saying, "I'm not awarding a penalty as it's only a little way into the area" or "it's not a goal as it's only a little way over the line?"

Needless to say the referee had lost all his credibility from that moment on. Add the back pass to the APSA keeper that he picked up and was not penalised and the Basildon player who said to the referee "we should have had a fecking foul back there" and received a red card for his trouble, to the referee's tale of woe..

Now I have been watching professional football for 45 years and I'd thought I'd seen some poor referees over the years but tonight took the biscuit! angry

BTW we should have had a hatful tonight and need a decent striker!

Without being at the game I would not like to comment (ok I know itS a Blairism)but if I were a ref my decision to hand out cards would be based on whether I felt that the keeper had committed the act deliberatley knowing he was outside the box. Six inches or 10 yards should mean no difference (as I keep telling my missus).

I rememeber a game at Basildon in 93/94 where Roy Drake the Boro keeper was penalised for going over the 18 yard line before relasing the ball from his hands when taking a drop kick. Bas scored from the resulting free kick. However the pitch was so bad you could not see the 18 yard line and Drake's defence was that how could he penalised for being the wrong side of a non-exisitant line.

I wouldn't like to say whether the handball by the 'keeper was deliberate. Remember we are a long way back in the stands at the McMillan. However, it should still have been a yellow card at the very least. The referee didn't even seem to want to even talk to him, judging by the delay. The 'keeper was already back on his line organising the wall that had already started to form before the ref even started walking towards him. He cerianly gave the impression he was only going through the motions!

And what about the offside decision in the second half (one of the few decisions that lino got right!) when the ref gave an advantage which allowed the offside APSA forward to tackle the Basildon defender and win back possession. Absolutely ridiculous!

Just to clarify on this guys - the ref only sends the goalkeeper off if he thinks the goalkeeper is denying a goalscoring opportunity. Or a yellow card if he thinks it is unsporting behaviour (cheating) but not denying a goalscoring opportunity.

If it was an accident and there were defenders about and no attackers then a free kick with no action is the correct decision here.

I was not at the game, so I cant pass comment on whether the ref was right or wrong?

The forward was running through and the keeper came to the edge of his box to claim the ball before the forward could get there. Whether he knew he was just outside his box was questionable but his actions prevented the forward from developing an attacking situation. A definite yellow card as a minimum.

At one point, I was actually wondering if the referee thought to himself "It's only the Essex Thames-side, I'm not going to bother taking it too seriously". If only Dave Hefford had been there assessing, that referee would have been lucky to get home by 4am!
