Hornchurch 2 Leyton Pennant 1

A deserved three points against a Leyton Pennant rejuvenated after the arrival of a new manager and six new players.

It was Pennant who took the lead after 11 minutes when Chris Moore was adjudged to have pushed an attacker when going up for a header and Ian Cooper despatched the spot kick which had to be retaken after the first was ruled out for encroachment. We equalised six minutes later after Steve Jones was pushed over on the six yard line. Jones stepped up and netted in style from 12 yards.

On the hour Jamie Southon looked certain to put us ahead with a far post header from a Danny Benstock cross but somehow keeper Wes Jackman managed to block the effort. Our winning goal came with 15 minutes to go and it turned out to be an amazing strike. Steve Jones picked the ball up on the touchline after a previous cross was cleared, turned and curled the ball round a defender and in under the bar despite the best efforts of Jackman. A late flurry from Pennant nearly resulted in an equaliser with Danny Benstock saving us with an excellent goalline clearance at the post.

Line-up:- Kharine, Gooding (Cripps 62), Kimble, Marsden, Jopson, Moore, Lowery (Cowley 72), Southon, Jones, John (Martin 35), Benstock. Sub not used:- Wood (GK).
