The Football Finder Boys Make A Great Impression At Leatherhead
As somebody who has harped on about the newly created UK Football Finder team, I was delighted to have been given the chance to see them in action at Leatherhead's Fetcham Grove stadium last night.
Having attended a business meeting in Sittingbourne earlier in the day with a contact from Tewkesbury, we decided to take in the game at Leatherhead on the way back home. The agreement being that I paid for tickets and drinks (strictly lemonade for the driver, although a few morons on the M25 drove as if they had swallowed a brewery!)
It's a good job that we gave ourselves some extra time, as the Sat-Nav in my mate's car had no idea where to take us! We headed into the Town Centre just before 19:00 and managed to find somebody who was actually en route to the game - so with a navigator on board we pulled up to the ground at 19:10 exactly and made our way into the clubhouse.
UK Football Finder FC came out in their 'Barcelona' type kit, and were followed by the Leatherhead team in their traditional green and white strip. A few (maybe non-ironic) chants of 'who are ya?' by the home fans echoed around the ground, and as if to answer the question the visitors put in a performance that was confident and competent.
Despite not having much match practice, and according to their manager after most of the players had to come along at the last minute to due being let down by 'no-shows', it seemed as if the players had known each other for years as they played a quick passing game and supported each other well. The first goal was testament to their skills - ex Lille full-back Jerome Kagawa combining with former Woking Academy midfielder Jordan Smith to thread the ball through to ex Salisbury City and Muangthong United striker Michael Dixon who gave the home 'keeper no chance. A second goal for the visitors duly followed when Kagawa ran from wide and crossed for the on-rushing Giuseppe Puma who had left his marker for dead. He rose to head home, but his header deflected in off the Leatherhead #5 and left the home 'keeper clutching thin air.
The standard of football by the visitors was amazing, and at times you could be forgiven for thinking that you actually were watching Barcelona! 2-0 down at the break, the home team manager looked bewildered as he left the field. Leatherhead, in fairness, had not played bad at all - and at times had forced a few openings. However the visitors defence was extremely impressive - marshalled well by John Kamara and Jarrell Gray (who had been called up to play a few hours before the game - he played a nerveless and competent game and dealt with crosses and strikers effortlessly). Their goalkeeper was also impressive, pulling off some good saves from the Leatherhead strikers, and the talk from the locals at half-time was 'Ruddy heck, them lads are good - hope Richard or Barry signs them up!' A visiting scout from a Football League club who I spoke to at the tea-hut at half time said that he was 'amazed that the lads in the Barcelona colours had not been signed up' and that he would be telling his boss about them.
The visitors made a host of changes at half-time, and maybe this disrupted their game-plan as Leatherhead managed to peg it back to 2-2. However, the visitors dug deep and were rewarded when the ball was played through to Dixon (who was my man-of-the-match) who rifled home an unstoppable shot after great build up. The win was wrapped up close to the end when former Bishop's Stortford winger Ike Nzuraba got clear and slotted home for a 4-2 win to the visitors.
Leatherhead were very gracious in defeat, with handshakes and smiles aplenty. They knew that they had been given a good game and it was a great gesture by the home fans to give the visitors a standing ovation as they left the field.
As well as Michael Dixon, goalkeeper Aaron Bufton, full-back Richard Brindley (once of Norwich City and now a free-agent) and central defender John Kamara (who was on trial with Brighton & Hove Albion until recently) played exceptionally well.
A fantastic game at a friendly club, and the talk in the car on the way back to Gloucester was about how we had both witnessed one of the best games of football in many a long while.
